A few days late... i've been wanting to share this story...but haven't gotten to it till now. so, this happened Tuesday. i was leaving work when someone told me there was a dog in a car outside. well, here in texas, it's been in the high 80's during the day...so it quickly gets far too hot for a dog in a car within a few min. so i went to the parking lot to see what was going on...well, i look in all the cars, feeling very b&e-esk, then i find the dog. windows up, in the sun. then realize the car is running! so we have a client inside (this is a client space) who will be there for about 1.5 hours so she has left her dog in a running car to keep him cool. well, at least the dog is ok...um, HAPPY EARTH DAY! oh, the irony.

she was being a responsible owner I've done that before, not for an hour and a half but better than letting the dog die of the heat and it is nice she takes the dog out and about instead of leaving it home all day every day.

idling car So let’s turn off our engines! Here are some quick facts about idling. • Idling burns about 1 gallon per hour. • An idling vehicle emits almost 20 times more pollution than travelling at 30 mph. • Idling your vehicle for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel than turning it off and restarting your engine (restarting a car has little impact on the battery and starter). • Idling elimination could reduce harmful greenhouse gases by 34.5 million tons per year in the United States.

These are good facts to know but I'm still glad the person in question left the AC on for her dog. Not the best environmental choice, to be sure - but better than letting your dog die in a hot car. Maybe she'll just take the dog in with her next time!
