Watchmen In a word, bleah. What a bunch of incredibly cynical claptrap. And I actually liked The Dark Knight and Iron Man. Did anyone here see this movie? A couple coworkers and myself went for the whole IMAX experience today. All the comic book nerds(*) in the audience were definitely going gaga over it. (*) I used to be

not into comic books but as a sometime sci-fi book reader the concept of Watchmen intrigued me and I was interested in getting to see it. Thanks for the concise review,CB :-)

I have heard bad things about it. I was very excited about it from the previews, but now I don't think it's worth the movie theatre money.

I'm not going to see it. I'm a comic fan, but I'm not going to pay money to see a movie where a super hero woman is raped, and a pregnant woman is stabbed. That is NOT entertainment.

there is an attempt, yes. *spoilers* For the first, yes it sucked. Others intervened so the perp didn't go through with it, but the assault beforehand really sucked to watch. I hadn't read the comics, so wasn't expecting this at all. For the second, yes, a pregnant Vietnamese woman is murdered via gunshot, by the same perp. That also sucked to watch. But then, the whole Vietnam War sequence sucked to watch. Fuck the makers for choosing Wagner to accompany US sanctioned mass murder and destruction.

tried to read it but couldn't. Not really into the whole comic book thing but I did see the movie. I thought it was pretty good. TOO LONG though. I peeked at the watch a few times and I think I fell asleep a second or two. For the most part it was ok. The movie plot seemed to be the least bit of the picture. The expository on the characters was the real story. I like the concept, too, about who's watching the watchmen. Kinda like who watches (and keeps in check) the CIA and their abuse of power? If you're a comic book fan, you may like this. Wolverine is represented in varios forms of fine art:

Stopped reading? I don't read many. But Sandman I liked way back when. What were your favorites?

I bet I'd like Sandman too. I just never got around to reading it. But it's never too late, isn't it. We'll see. I liked Daredevil, as well as the X-Men. The former because I found him enormously interesting being a hero who could go swinging among the skyscrapers even though he was blind, and the series overall was a lot more grittier, because aside from the radar sense, he wasn't a super-powered hero. Just someone with human-practiced strength and gymnastic/martial abilities. The latter because I'd just gotten into the series right when Storm cut off all her hair and started sporting lots of leather and a mohawk instead. She controlled the fucking weather and lightning, and looked damned cool doing it! Then Marvel started in on the Mutant Massacre storyline, where they set up good and evil using their limited understanding of the world: good were the mutants struggling in the face of three evils: the wing who sought to regulate and exterminate them, the other wing of mutant fanatics who wanted to establish a Mutant Supremacy society, and of course, the usual bad mutants who were looking to take advantage of the good mutants being beseiged while waging war against the supremacists. It just got so depressing with the incessant death and destruction. And overall it was like reading the world news as told by mainstream news outlets, where all conflict and viewpoints are reduced to the equivalent of Kissinger vs. FARC. So I quit. :-p Anyway, other stuff I liked was Zot!, both the comic, and the absolutely hysterical mini-comic they'd semi-regularly put out, of the characters as stick figures. My favorite line: "Where's Cynical Man?" "Oh, he's out back, digging the bomb shelter." And most recently, Persepolis. That was really good, I utterly devoured it in sitting. It sounds like you still read a few?

I loved Zot and Persepolis. No, I don't read much any more. Just whatever graphic novels my library happens to have on the shelf. I liked Hellblazer, can't explain why. Grimy demons and homelessness and celtic mythology perhaps.

oh, and a confession ;-p My first issue of Daredevil included in the plotline a woman who'd been kidnapped by Irish republican thugs. There was panel I found especially compelling: she was tied to a chair and being interrogated, but that panel was a close-up of her face, with a gloved hand wiping a tear away. In other words, that issue of Daredevil was what gave me my first clue about wanting to do sexually twisted things to girls.

Hmmm... OK then, I was fascinated by the Zot episode where the friend of Jenny's comes out of the closet. And of Daredevil, I liked Electra best. Because she was crazy and fearless. And wore a scarf.
